The Pond Afghan Shepherds Can't Live Without | Wolves, Cold & Traditional Cooking Deep in the harsh mountains of Afghanistan, life depends on something that may look small and simple—a vital pond that provides water for the shepherds and their animals. As the season changes, finding enough grass becomes harder, forcing Afghan shepherd families to take their sheep and livestock into dangerous mountain areas where steep cliffs and rocky slopes make every journey risky. At night, hungry wolves become another threat. Shepherds remain awake, listening and watching over their animals because a single wolf attack can put the entire flock at risk. As the cold arrives, the smoke rising from the tents tells another story—the mountains are becoming colder, and the shepherds begin using the firewood they collected for the coming winter. Alongside this difficult mountain life, the day continues with traditional daily work: milking sheep, cleaning the tents, washing clothes and dishes, caring for the livestock, and preparing food in the open air. In this episode, the shepherd family prepares a fresh traditional mixed vegetable dish with okra, green beans, eggplant and potatoes, cooked over a wood fire. A special triangular sweet made from dough, sugar, lemon peel and apple jam is also prepared inside the tent. A shepherd woman also prepares fresh sheep's milk using a unique traditional milk-churning vessel, adding another fascinating part of this rural mountain life.
