Yeah, the monsters weren't real, but what's more scary? Some supernatural monster chasing some kids, or some creep in a suit chasing around some kids?

The Mystery Machine got overheated in Haunted House Hang Up and ran out of gas in Spooky Space Kook. That’s it. Those are the only times car trouble played a role in the plot in the original series.

The phantom from "Hastle in the Castle" (when Shaggy and Fred jumped through it) scared me. The ghost clown's power of hypnotism really scared me. And the spooky space kook absolutely scared the bejeebers out of me - especially when we Daphne said, "Jumpin' jelly beans! There's a whole army of them!"
When Velma was running from the phantom shadow, the phone rang, she stopped and answered it, handed it to the shadow and said, "It's for you" is my all time ever favorite Scooby Doo moment.

talking about the van trouble. I vaguely remember a two-parter where the whole first part was a road trip with no problems and ends with Fred saying something along the lines of "wow i think this is the longest we've gone without trouble" (cue van breaking down), everyone else "FRED."

As the dad of a Great Dane, I concur with everything he says in the first point. They are goofy, loveable, clumsy and loyal pups. Wouldn't have it any other way!

Scooby-Doo was definitely the start of my love of horror, even without the "scary" mysteries. Moved from this to Goosebumps, AYAOTD and things like Courage and Grim & Evil...

Spooky Space Kook was the one that scared me, mainly because of its laugh
