Marie Atoinette was supposed to promote French fashion and the silk and other expensive frabric trades. When she got sick of the heavy frocks and corsets and began wearing simpler dresses made of Muslin they criticized her for not being queenly enough and because everybody followed her fashion this affected the French fashion and silk industry and she was blamed for that too. The poor girl couldn't win.

There is a series called “Versailles” and it is excellent. The aristocrats were forced to move to Versailles so that the king could keep an eye on them and prevent mutiny and conspiracies. It was a really an oppressive and dangerous place to live - scandals, intrigues, poisoning, spying

England aristocracy used so much perfumes and scents, Sir Walter Raleigh remarked
"The best smell for a woman is no smell at all!"

I have an obsession with tragic queens. I read the biography of Marie Antoinette written by Antonia Frazer. It's absolutely breath-taking in the minute detail of life at Versailles. Her last months in prison are especially hard to read of - apparently there was evidence she may have had cervical cancer as she was constantly bleeding. Even so, she maintained her dignity even when having to use a chamber pot in front of her jailers. She's one of the most maligned queens in history - along with Anne Boleyn.

Marie Antoinette wasn’t even remotely obsessed with Diamonds. She WAS however in love with pearls. The Chemise dress was a larger scandal than the DuBarry necklace.

Marie Antoinette doesn't get enough credit for adopting orphans. She also turned down the expensive diamond necklace made for Louis's mistress. She thought that it was too expensive. It wasn't until she was at the french court did she over spend. Her mom brought her up frugal by sewing her clothes and saving $€£¥.
It's interesting how the ancient romans & Egyptians were cleaner than the 1700s

I don't think it's entirely fair to say that she was obsessed with anything, more so she had already realised her position from the moment she set foot there and she was trying to appease everyone, so when she found something she could push the boundaries with she did, she was essentially a scapegoat for everyone's problems and she had no chance from the start

All I know is her last days were incredibly sad. She lost her children, and her humanity. Poor Louis had listened to stupid advisors who of course, were part of the aristocracy. They led him astray to keep nobles from doing things such as paying taxes. Louis and Marie knew exactly what was going on with the regular folk and were advised not to interfere. They were too young.
