@ 10 mins. He moves sideways and you realise there’s a whole head of hair back there. Excellent reveal.

thanks for this video, my room is too small but moving the table with monitors and pc monitor away from wall a bit, and realizing i can move my chair back just to sit and listen here and there while mixing is what I learned from this. Thanks!

I find mixing low frequencies on headphones fixes a lot of the issues with sub, which tends to be the major problem with rooms. The rest is never really a problem if you have decent enough symmetry. In saying that, again, rough mix in the room and finesse it through headphones works well.

Incredible video! I am a KRK Rokit5 long time user, and these tips are great. I had no idea that KRK had the app, and having the ability to discern exactly where 30 degrees is a super useful feature.

I agree with the principles set out here for mixing and mastering. I think the problem most of us have (apart from less than ideal shaped rooms) is that we are more often than not being 'creative' in this space. So we are sat with a couple of keyboards, or a keyboard and some modules, some racks and perhaps even effects units that are not on the floor but at table height.... then we have computer monitors and for most of us home guys, furniture, books, records (I think of them as diffusers!). But you get the idea. Most of us are not sat in front of pro desk furniture with a pull out keyboard and vesa mounted computer monitors. So the space gets kind of cramped with less than perfect possibilities.

To give an example, my composing rig is downstairs in the large vaulted ceiling living room (I live alone and am an old git, so I can indulge myself). I have a modular rig upstairs with a better mixing set up. But for working on a piece casually throught the day, I have a two tier keyboard stand. Speakers either side... and MPC off to one side and a mixer to the other. Pedals are on a large coffee table behind me, guitars all over. LOL. So... yes the speakers are against a glass wall about 12" away. .Spaced at the width of a 61 note keyboard. I am sat in front of the keyboards to play. Basically I have a speaker in each ear :) But unless I move the keyboard back about 3-4 feet to form the triangle, it is what it is. This would then create another problem as I would then be using virtually the entire room .... and it is my living space remember. So, between a rock and a hard place. I am lucky... I have a big room (for europe), but it has to accomodate multiple functions. I think a lot of home based musicians appreciate this situation. And it makes me realise why so many people use headphones almost exclusively. I don't like them to wear all day... but I do use them to check a mix periodically. Of course, I could move everything to the 'studio proper' upstairs, but then I'd unlikely to be as spontaneous. It's a palavar to fire it all up. First world problems eh?
