Have you considered that in the age of "everyone needs to go to university", that the universities need to create courses to cater for the people who in a previous era would not have passed the entrance criteria. You can guess which departments expanded to cater to this influx.

Certainly, in Britain, entry into higher education used to be too restricted - fewer than 5 per cent of school-leavers - and many people were excluded who ought not to have been.
