Money Match Controversy - My experience of a very dramatic money match!

A funny story. I once played professional pool player Darren Appleton at a pub in Pontefract. Winner stayed on the table. I placed my money on the table to play for the balls. I played Darren who asked before we started the game, if it was for a pint, I said okay. Darren's mate started laughing, then asked me, did I know who I was playing, no I had never seen him before. I only had one shot and Darren cleared up. I bought him a pint. While I was hustled into that, I still bought him a pint even though Darren said no you don't have to.

No idea how he can consider himself a proper player with a temperament and sportsmanship like that. Absolute joke 😂

years ago i used to play pool for the various clubs around the stoke-on-trent area. We used to come up against this weekly . I was known as asubstandard player but when i got my head on and ignored everyone else but the ref i was useful . Won more than i lost . If they want to shout let them if you concentrate on the table and the balls you will win more games than you loose . Good luck with your future pool games .

Very Raw mate, thanks for sharing. When I was younger I played a lot of these matches and I never liked the atmosphere. It was what eventually made me stop playing as a pro-am. Following you on the UP Champ league though mate! Keep going!

It's why I'd avoid money matches when I played (bar for a couple of years and even then for limited amounts and with players who I knew would be okay and not in the same crowd as any yahoos I knew). About half the time the experience and hassle makes it feel almost lose/lose and you just end up not even wanting to be there. The younger you are the worse it is. I hate the sight of some 13 year old kid, playing a money match in this sort of atmosphere at the behest of his dad or uncle, with onlookers all with their own bets and like a rabble throughout. That's my nightmare scenario and pool at its worst (for some, it's pool at its best!). Even with adults though, I hear about big money matches going on and immediately think ''I hope there's no trouble'' and ''I don't envy the ref''.

In this specific money game I think a lot of the trouble could have been solved by a strong referee basically telling both players and the crowd to keep the temperature down and abide by his decision as far as whether it's total snooker or not. You don't automatically have that in an arranged money match but it helps because if games get too heated then it just turns nasty. An experienced ref here would have worked wonders.

Don't know if anyone else noticed but the last break was actually a foul-void break as they weren't set up correctly 😉
