The Battle of the Somme was a defining moment of the 20th century, and it’s one of the major battles we’ve chosen to dive into in our brand new book, INFERNO.

INFERNO looks at a series of twelve battles from across the two world wars and explores the decisions and events that shaped their outcome in much greater depth than we can do in a single video.

Print, e-book and audiobook pre-orders are available right now. Your support is hugely appreciated and helps us reach as many people as possible!

If you found this video interesting take a look at the book and grab your copy here:

https://www.battleguide.co.uk/inferno

When I was 17, I interviewed a WWI vet for a History Class project. I was a history nerd, so I had an idea about the war, and at the time, 1986, there were still a decent number of aging vets around. I found my subject by walking into the local VFW and just asking the guys there if they knew a WWI vet I could interview for a project. A few phone calls later, and I was at his house. I stayed for about 4 hours. I lost the paper I wrote, but I did get an A. I kept in touch with the man for a few years, and only lost contact when I joined the Marines in 1989. He did write me once in Boot Camp, and that was the last time I heard from him. Rest in Peace, warrior. You did your part.

For anyone wondering. Geoffrey Malin died in Cape Town from cancer in 1940. A hugely watchable video that was very engaging. Thank you. Battle Guide.

Does anyone else get frustrated that the algorithm hides channels like this from us for months or years before recommending them? This video is insanely high quality and I’m upset to find out they’ve been making these for literal years but I’m just now discovering them.

This is the way video history should be. Genuine film and an exploration of the small moments, memories of the day-to-day that made the past real, and drawing the parallel locations of the long-gone past with the present. Well done.

I’m 66 years old and grew up in south central Nebraska. When I was little we knew our neighbor (where we kept our horses) had fought in the Great War. We visited many times but try as we did to get him to tell us some stories, all he would say is “boys, war is a terrible thing”. It’s a personal treasure to have known first hand a WW1 veteran. RIP Adolph Bierman.

The amount of film footage taken during WWI is truly astonishing, considering the invention of the movie camera was rather young, if not still in its infancy.

The first clip is of my great-great grandfather on my mums side. It was taken from The Battle of the Somme. If I remember correctly, his name was Ernest Robins and he was from Oxfordshire. We have his photo in our house and I'm incredibly proud to know someone so close to me did something so courageous, when you see a rare clip of it makes it that much more special.

What a senseless war this was. Young men of all sides sacrificed in a war that could never have any winners. These men lost their lives and Europe losts its empires. I cannot stop thinking how different the world would have been without this war or if it had been resolved in 1914

Well done, gentlemen. It has been a long time since I have been truly moved by a documentary. This is my first-ever YouTube comment, and I must concur with the vast majority. This is truly a first-class video, and you can be very proud of your efforts. Keep up the exceptional work.
