You know the house is cold when you open the refrigerator door and warm air tumbles out.

Hello from an uninsulated 150 year old house in Virginia!! I don't like to criticize it out loud because of the ghosts but holy crap it's cold

Thank you for showing the truth about living in old Japanese houses. A lot of foreigners don't know how hardcore it is to just survive in them during the winter.

Honestly being cold at night with a bed set up like that is the worst. Even in survival training and boot camp they teach you best way to stay warm is to not be on the ground. Get anything to raise up the level of the mattress, even if its 4 bricks and piece of plywood. Will drastically help with the heat preservation.

I can see why people just abandon the old homes. It is a bit like staying in the wild west, with no creature comforts! ❤😊

Last weekend our heating system went down. It was Saturday, even though we have service contract with a gas company ,they said they could send a crew only on Tuesday. This was a very cold week and highest temperature was less than 31f degree. I grew up a rural area in Tohoku in Japan. So I thought I could survive. It was brutal. Luckily I had an electric space heater and carpet. My husband kept calling the gas company. Finally they sent crew on Monday morning. It was the best thing happened in 2026😂. My daughter's dream was buying a kominka in Japan. But not anymore after she got to know the reality living in Japan. We are very spoiled having a central heating system in US.

I remember seeing a story of a western woman married to a japanese man and they were building their house in Japan, and she insisted they insulated the house. Her parents in law asked what it was, and she said it was insulation to keep the house warm in the winter and they seemed almost upset that they were doing things differently than Japanese people tend to do and said "We don't do that in Japan" to which she replied "I do"<br><br>Absolutely puzzling that insulation isn't the norm in a country that gets cold in the winter and hot in the summer.
