Loved this, especially first four minutes (!) where not a word is said, just the gurgling of the stream. So refreshing and absolute class in a world of shouty YouTubers immediately welcoming you with hype.... Really informative, thanks ++

This explains why I've never been able to get a photo of one.

There's something mysteriously fascinating about photographing kingfishers. I also photograph them in rivers. I use an EOS R5 II with an RF200-800 or RF100-500. Because kingfishers fly freely around the river, I don't have time to use a tripod to find and photograph them, so I shoot handheld. Once I got used to shooting with handheld camera equipment, I was able to capture the moment when a kingfisher dived to catch a fish. The sight of the kingfisher taking flight after catching a fish is truly beautiful.

Excellent Mike, I followed your advice on an earlier Kingfisher video and have had fabulous results for several years. When they are successful hunting and move off I go and change the prop . Yes I’ve also had them on my Fishing rods and on top of my hide👍

For me my core setups are

1 find somewhere with little branch over hang (makes it more likely for the kingfisher to land on your selected perch).

2 set up the camera gear perpendicular to the light. Dont have it directly behind you. That washes away all the contrast in the feathers.
Especially if there are no clouds.

3 you can get very very close to them, dont be worried about scaring them as they will return eventually as they travel up and down the river.
4 reduce detection set up your hide or ghillie suit with terrain behind you, it makes you stick out far less than you would if you were set up with nothing close behind you.

Nothing short of amazing -- well done! To do this, you need 4 things: equipment, knowledge, skills and opportunity. You nailed it here on all counts!

that was without a doubt the best Kingfisher advice I've seen, new sub.

Thank you so much for posting this video. I learnt three new things, one about the perches, two about putting them up after the hide and three most importantly setting you gear up and then putting the hide up over it. Lord how many times I have struggled setting my hide up, putting the gear in... Like, comment and subscribe, you just got the YouTube trifecta in under 6 minutes :)

Love the idea of the Christmas tree holder, Mike. Makes perfect sense. One thing I'd suggest, if you are able to keep the background far enough away from your perch, you should not see any issues with details showing when you stop down your aperture.
Fantastic, fantastic stuff!
