I'm with Angel. Seeing that Kirk's dad was well off and emotionally mature made me angry too. The mom's denial is definitely an indication of a bigger story that she has never faced.

My mother still acts as if she didn't see her 3rd husband abuse me. Not an ass whooping, but beating that I still have scars from. That shit still hurts, and I'm 43 years old now. That all took place from the age of 9 to 16. It's something in our community that screams, "If I deny it, it never happened. Due to that. My mother has never been in a home of mine. Shit! She doesn't even no my address, and 2 of my children don't know her. (Sorry for oversharing.)

You can be great without trauma. You can have love without struggle. You can accomplish great things without trials. You can be happy without pain.

1:08:08 this is the problem that you might not realize, Angel. Us regular black women who make 75 to 125k are told to aim lower. We are told that to expect a man to meet us where we are is unrealistic. We are told to lower our standards to men who make less and also to men that are emotional and mentally more immature. How does this make sense. No other race of woman is encouraged to do this.

Kirk's bio mom was extremely young when she had him, so admitting that the bio dad is his dad is admitting that she was sleeping with multiple ppl as a teen. I believe the shame is in who she was sleeping with & possibly not knowing who his dad was.

Kirk's parents were around 14 or 15 when they conceived Kirk in 1969. That was a time when children were often sent out of the room when adults were talking or gossiping. So, with the dad still being a child when he fathered a child, it's possible that he missed whatever whispers there may have been about his former fling getting pregnant. It probably wasn't widely or openly discussed in the spaces he dwelled. In addition, families went to great lengths to hide out-of-wedlock teen pregnancies in the 60s and earlier. Like Kirk, I'm from the Deep South and personally know now-older women who got pregnant as teens. When pregnant little girls started showing, some of them would get shipped off to Chicago or Detroit to stay with relatives until they gave birth. After which, the girl would return home, and the girl's MOM AND DAD would suddenly have a newborn "son" or "daughter" in the family, while the teen mother posed as the child's sibling and continued on with her adolescent life, school, and whatnot. I'm not saying that this exact thing happened with Kirk's then-15-year old mother, but this phenomenon shows the magnitude of the stigma and the extent to which some families would go to keep teen pregnancies a secret in those times. Nowadays, we live in a world with far fewer secrets due to both the destigmatization of things that used to be taboo AND the advent of media/tech that allows messages to be disseminated with relative ease.

My mom used to say that pre-marital pregnancies were so taboo (back then) that they would send the pregnant girl “away/out of town” until the baby was born and she would come back as if nothing happened. I wasn’t surprised Kirk’s dad knew nothing

Sad thing is that Kirk's story is not uncommon in our community in that era.
