The Psychology Behind Babies Who Act Different Around Their Father

The same baby. Crying the second mom leaves the room. And twenty minutes later, completely calm — laughing, loud, wild — in dad's arms. Most families have an explanation for this. He prefers mom. He's a daddy's boy. It's just a phase. Daniel Paquette at the Université de Montréal found something completely different. In this video: → The Activation Relationship Theory — and why your baby isn't choosing one parent over the other but running two completely separate neurological programs, one activated by each parent → What researcher Ruth Feldman documented about how mothers and fathers play differently from the earliest months — and why rough-and-tumble play isn't a father being reckless, it's a specific mechanism building emotional regulation → What Labrell's research found about the father who tosses his baby in the air — and the specific thing that alternation between excitement and safety is constructing inside the baby's nervous system → Why the major meta-analysis by van IJzendoorn and de Wolff found that father sensitivity predicted attachment with half the correlation of maternal sensitivity — and why the measurement itself was the problem, not the fathers → What a study of 117 babies found when the same infants went through the Strange Situation with mom at 12 months and dad at 18 months — and why the combination of both relationships predicted something neither alone could → What a consortium of 29 researchers at UC Berkeley found when they studied attachment networks instead of single bonds — and why children securely attached to both parents simultaneously showed outcomes that neither relationship could produce alone Your baby isn't being inconsistent. He's building, with two different people, the two things he'll need for the rest of his life — how to come back to safety. And how to leave it. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🔔 Subscribe for more science-backed videos on infant development and baby behavior every week. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ SOURCES & RESEARCH: Paquette, 2004 — Activation Relationship Theory, Université de Montréal Le Camus, 2000 — paternal role and world-opening function Feldman, 2003 — mother-father play differences in infancy Paquette & Dumont, 2013 — Early Child Development and Care Labrell, 1996 — paternal destabilization and emotional regulation van IJzendoorn & de Wolff, 1997 — maternal and paternal sensitivity meta-analysis ScienceDirect, 2021 — N=117, Strange Situation with both parents Greater Good Science Center/UC Berkeley — 29-researcher attachment network consortium PMC, 2023 — N=124 families, actor and partner effects in dual attachment ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ CHAPTERS: 00:00 — The same baby, two completely different children 01:20 — Two systems, not one preference 03:30 — Why the play looks so different 06:00 — The sensitivity nobody measured correctly 09:00 — Two independent attachments and what the research found ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ This video is for educational purposes only.
