A lot of dudes don't realize that all the old 50s leads and solos are built on this platform. So much of early rock & roll, rockabilly, golden age country, blues, and really jazz in its infancy especially exist almost exclusively on chord tones. Also Hendrix was a rhythm player before he was anything else. He's not quite nailed to the chords like that but the rhythmic elements largely are the songs especially in terms of the fact that he mostly didn't play his solos exactly the same way twice. If you're not good at rhythm you're probably not good at guitar

Even tho I know this particular type of thing, I stayed because your videos are enjoyable and in case I might learn something new.
Left a like because this kind of playing is absolutely essential when playing with others. I hope more can learn from this lesson. It’s that important, at least in my eyes.

I love how every time I come across your videos, you’re literally summarizing what I’ve been working on recently 😂.

I’ve been working on this system for the past few months, but this week I feel like I’ve had a breakthrough in seeing the triads of the parent major scale around whatever chord progression I’m playing to, and connecting that roadmap to my internal voice. It feels like I’ve opened the suitcase in Pulp Fiction, but it’s abundantly clear that this is a ton of power to wield irresponsibly (lol). For the first time I feel like I have too many choices for where my melodic ideas can go. It’s cool seeing how the melodies in my head look on the guitar within the context of the triad system, and further breaking those triads down to create endless ideas. I feel like I’m finally on the path to honing how I play rather than stumbling over what to play.

As always, thanks for the right-on-time lesson!

whoa big guy, that was a really solid lesson for anyone who has been in a rut or just lacking in that fundamental area. Fretboard hacks like this make all the difference. Had to comment just to say thank you for spreading your knowledge and being a great teacher.
