Here's why we made this one: Atlanta traffic is getting worse while billions are being spent on express lanes, interstate construction, MARTA, the Atlanta BeltLine, autonomous vehicles and major upgrades at Hartsfield-Jackson. We spent a month digging into Atlanta’s biggest transportation projects: what’s being built, what it costs, when it’s coming and whether any of it will actually make Metro Atlanta easier to move through. Because nothing shapes daily life in Atlanta more than how we get around. And everybody who calls this place home learns the same thing sooner or later: The traffic isn’t in your way. MARTA is replacing trains that date back to 1979 and redesigning its bus network. The Atlanta BeltLine is connecting more neighborhoods while the debate over BeltLine rail refuses to die. Autonomous vehicles are already moving through Atlanta’s streets. And beneath the world’s busiest airport, the upgraded Plane Train moves nearly a quarter-million people a day through a single tunnel. Some of these Atlanta transportation projects are already here. Some are years away. Some may never happen at all. In the meantime, traffic across Metro Atlanta is going to get much worse before it gets better. The question in 2026 isn’t whether Atlanta will keep growing. It will. The question is whether we can build a city that gives us more places to go without taking more of our lives to get there.
