Ah, the committee: where evidence is graciously patronised, then discreetly smothered beneath a quilt of cultivated denial.

He was a guest who painted on the wall a thank you. A doodle so to speak. It doesn’t feel like joint effort. Experts can be wrong.

Your story is a piece of art by itself. Great! Thank You!

Ben Nicholson. He was so famous in the UK that I never heard of him - and as an artist myself, I've been on the art scene for a good few years.

Nicholson made the mural as a spontaneous "thank you gift". Murray blemished the work by adding his contributions over the years of which Nicholsen never saw what Muray did. That is not what I would call a collaboration, more of a devaluation.

All of the investigation and the conclusion make this work quite special. The lower valuation reveals how often silly and unsupported is the over emphasis on value in the art world. This piece probably offers greater insight into Ben Nicolson's work, and is so specific to a place and date and artist circle that it is endlessly fascinating. One thing I've seen collectors latch onto is any information specific to the piece in their collection that they can then tell their friends and other collectors. This piece has a wealth of this.
What I'd like to see is a major museum show of great art, and perhaps some not at all 'great' art done by artists who've been completely forgotten, or whom were never known at all. I've see many works like this. Not all but many paintings done with effort and intelligence are not at all 'worthless.'
Let the curators explain the aesthetic value, depth of thought and visual interest, and perhaps historical connection of otherwise 'forgettable' art. I'll bet more time is spent by people marveling over low resolution news photos of works sold for astounding prices at auction then is spent looking at actual art. How much attention was given that banana duct taped to a wall?

It seems more like an expression of gratitude from the artist to the family that had supported him since the time before he became famous. I doubt it's an collaboration. The collaboration happens between peers. Fred was a patron and a friend but not a peer to Ben Nicholson. I have watched many many episodes of Fake or Fortune and I believe these so called experts value their own "opinion" about someone's work more than all the other evidence available. I don't think anyone would have questioned if they declared this as genuine Ben Nicholson, but it boosts their ego to declare that Nicholson would have done more with the musical symbols, as if these experts know what the artist was thinking, what was his state of mind when he painted it.

That is a lot of evidence for this being an original piece.

Apparently, it was pulled from the auction a few days days before the event. Couldn’t find anything else after that,,,,,,

Love this show. But.., I think they got it wrong. The provenance is there. It’s should be 100%

How can that be from just looking at it, by the three that just came and stared at, when that woman took scanning of that and she’s the expert to conclude that that was done by one hand.
