I have occasionally prayed, "Lord, you said to pray for and love our enemies, and, in obedience to Your command, I lift up this person. Please bring my feelings into line with Your will."

Pastor Doug, Thank you for this insightful message. I spent my career as a claims adjuster handling some very tragic matters. One particular claim involved a man crossing a street and being backed into violently by a person ( our insured) who did not look behind her and was trying to quickly get a parking spot. The man crossing was killed and the wife of that man was someone I had to meet with. One of the first things the wife said to me was an was a heartfelt and sincere question, asking me how the woman who back over and killed her husband was doing. Her question took me completely off guard. She did not use the words- "I forgive her" but clearly by her empathy toward the wrongdoer who took something precious from her was showing forgiveness and compassion. Being lame in my reply I don't think I truly knew in that moment except to assume probably rightly that the driver felt terribly. I failed to do in that moment was to ask the widow if I either could share that sentiment with the negligent driver- ( which likely would have given the driver some comfort) or encouraged the widow to reach out directly to that driver, if she felt up to it. For my lameness in that moment I feel not only that I dropped the ball but sinned in my own way. Anyway Doug- thanks again. Tom

I think pastor Doug is very on point..... :) and laid out my own forgiveness understanding from the word.....🧐😮
However..... I think I would kindly challenge the idea of forgive and forget..... That is not what God always does right? I noticed in my yearly reading plan this year, how many times God brings up Moses and Aaron's sin and reminds them of the consequences of their sin.
(Not getting to see the promised land, yet they are still in God's family) There are consequences in this life for sin....and if you say, cheat of your wife, she might divorce you....or separate seperate from you.....and oftentimes sadly, men (and women) need to be reminded of the REASON for the relational consequences for their sin. Not to throw it in their face, but because it gets swept under the rug, minimized as time goes by and a forgiving person continues in genuine kindness, but the offender has done nothing to begin to demonstrate trustworthiness. (Oftentimes, the exact opposite)
Words of repentance do not equal reconciliation...trust must be restored..and the onus is on the offender....
I would also argue that reconciliation is not even required, though, yes, it would be wonderful......and the highest and best aim.
God is in the business of forgiving, but he is not all love and nothing else....no boundaries....no consequences.

Just a few thoughts

Can you call someone to forgive you? In other words, if you ask them to forgive, can you call them to forgive (Luke 17:3)? Not to forgive is sin. And so if the person offended can call out your sin, can the offender ask for forgiveness and call the person to forgive? Or, can only a person not invovled called a person to forgive?

This makes sense to me in relation to Christian brothers and sisters, but what about non Christians? Is it the same?
