  the indian girl did not tell the names that are used for countries. for Egypt = Misr, China = Chin, Russia = Rus and so on. She just pronounced the english names in indian accent.

  In Vietnamese, the pronunciation of “Russia” is actually related to the Mongols. The Mongols ruled Russia over 200 years, and they disliked words beginning with the letter R (a phenomenon also found in Korean and Japanese), so they added an “O” in front of “RUS.” Modern Mongolian still pronounces it like this way. In early times, Chinese transliterations of “Russia” &nbsp;kept the “RUS” type of pronunciation. However, over 300 years ago, when the Manchus allied with the Mongols and occupied China, the “ORUS” pronunciation began to be used by the Chinese. The Chinese used the character “俄” to represent the “O” sound (which, 300 years ago, was pronounced as “O”), but more than 1,000 years ago, this character was pronounced “NGA,” which was exactly when the Vietnamese adopted Chinese characters. As a result, in modern Vietnamese, it is still pronounced “NGA.”
