  I was part of the scientific party on a highly automated research vessel in the Antarctic.<br>The crew was very proud of their ship, insisting that from their control room overlooking the engines that they could monitor everything that was going on in the ship.<br>One day we started getting stinging fumes coming up from the lower decks. We asked the ships crew what was going on and they said everything was fine. They were just washing the engines<br>After another couple hours of the fumes, the scientific crew started using sniffers and other stuff to try to find the source of the fumes that were still stinging our eyes and throats.<br>Finally, one of the scientific crew started walking around and physically inspecting every location. He found that a boiler that was designed to keep the back deck ice free had gotten out of control and was red hot. The stinging fumes that we were experiencing were the result of the paint burning off the walls in the room that housed that boiler. There was no indication of any problem in the control room.<br>The message of this is if you trust your automation too much, you can get yourself into trouble. You still need human eyes looking at your environment.
