  It's interesting that even though the Mongols conquered China, these victorious Mongols chose to use the Chinese language and political system and were eventually assimilated. This is probably what is called cultural victory.

  Honestly the fact that the Roman Empire had all of those things going against it, and then still managed to survive and thrive as a culture and entity for 2200 years just makes Rome so much more impressive if you really think about it

  Geography is really important here.<br>The centre of China is a massive flat plain of very fertile farmland. The centre of Rome is a saltwater lake.<br>The best way to describe the Qin Dynasty in European terms that I can come up with is Prague or Zurich ruling everything from the Seine to the Vistula. Rome <i>never</i> got to the majority of the Great European Plain. And that&apos;s just about the only place in Europe from which you could build a power base large enough to reliably control the rest.

  Another potential ‘China of Europe’ or civilisation state is the Carolingian empire. France is arguably the closest to a European geographical equivalent of China. If Charlemagnes empire had stayed unified it could have become that state.

  One more factor: the Chinese characters do not restrict the pronunciation therefore even Chinese language divided into different unintelligible languages they can still communicate using written Chinese. This is impossible in Late-Roman empire since the latin alphabet reflects the sound of the language

  Dont know if mentioned, but a big part of Chinas unity is their Writing System.<br>Thats a thing that was one major dividing factor in Rome.

  Whenever PH uses a map to represent the modern day (like at <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEWBixfnbb4&amp;t=28">0:28</a>) he uses the map from before ww1. It seems to be a theme throughout his videos that he sees La Belle Epoque as the &quot;natural&quot; period in history, in a way. It&apos;s an interesting bias to have.

  A good example of &quot;Rome as China&quot; in fiction is the Empire of Cyrodiil from the Elder Scrolls series. Big heartland region dominates the continent; dynasties and regimes install themselves, fight wars, and get overthrown; yet always the Empire reappears.<br><br>The original authors were explicit about their Asian inspirations, and it&apos;s a shame that newer installments have leaned away from that.
