I have by now heard many a western musicians react to Indian classical music. They have all been very good and exciting, but the two of you are the best I have heard so far. You both really want to understand and appreciate what you are listening to. You are learners and not just like collector. Thank you. BTW I am not a musician, just enjoy music

15:21 all of it is intentional. Indian classical music uses 22 stops, of which 12 stops are the solflege. The rest of the ten are called Shruti. They all have names. The guru teaches the acolyte the appropriate Shruti stops permissible for each raga. Note, not all ragas require the extra stops because they are defined by the use of non-alankar notes which are called ‘Khada’ notes. Khada means ‘standing’. The Raga Bihag example she gave passed through the appropriate notes. Students are taught for months to perfect this. It’s done only by senior students who have done 10-12 years of training. You’ll find special YouTube vlogs on Shruti. It’s advanced level stuff.

The world took many centuries to understand the Indian concept of Zero and place value system. Thank you for taking Indian music in the spotlight. It is a vast treasure trove yet to be re-discovered.

Western music is based upon absolute pitch, whereas Indian music is based on relative pitch. That single difference alone changes everything, and you have to take yourself out of the mindset of perfect pitch to understand it fully.

My son plays Carnatic music in keyboard. He uses pitch bend to bring the Gamaka effect. So if you use that, you can reproduce the exact sound. Very interesting.
