In around 2015 we removed a 130-year-old Lloyds Bank (Devon & Cornwall Banking Company 1832 to 1906) 30x40 feet bank vault in SW Devon, England. And we really underestimated how much work it was going to be. The face of the vault was 12" thick steel, but when we started to cut into it, we found it was full of sand from the nearby river, with around 50 cubic yards, or 150 cubic feet of sand stored in a chamber above the vault, which meant this dry fine sand flowed out of any holes you made in the sides, and this sand was behind all four walls, which was about 10" deep too. Then the inner 3 walls had 6 feet of concrete with steel bars ever 10" on the outside of the sand, but with a much thinner 2" steel plating on the inside, none of the steel was welded, but rivetted.

The vault door was about 60 tons with an Alfred Hubbs & Charles Chubb lock, and the bottom hinge was hung on a mercury-bath thrust bearing. The vault door took about a week to take apart and remove.

It makes you think why it needed to be built like this, as the bank was in the middle of a town centre. But with the GWR train station, Navy base, and a major shipping hub, they would have stored tons of gold.

34 years as a cop and I have never seen a thief attempt to break into a large safe regardless of quality on site. However, I have seen thieves wrap a chain around a safe and rip it through the walls and drag it down the street. Of course a small safe that a person can carry is a different story.

This is a great video, I’ve tried explaining to people that most “gun safes” are the same level of security as a filing cabinet or locking something in a drawer. If you want anything more than “keeping my kids from getting to these” then you need TL-15 at a minimum.

You know you have played WAY TOO MUCH GTA 5 when you watch a guy in a jump suit cut open a safe! and your thoughts immediately go to that game! 🤣🤣

Project Engineer here. Awesome demonstration! The quicker and cleaner way via the safe’s side wall is with a gas saw. And it will be the only tool you need other than the maybe a pry bar.
