I've never heard of color technique but it is interesting to think of major chords as primary and minor chords as secondary colors which I'll try to incorporate next time I practice or write something. One other tool that's been super helpful is learning the steps of the scale or breaking it down by semi and whole tones. For Major it's Whole-Whole-Half-Whole-Whole-Whole-Half. Then I believe Minor is Whole-Half-Whole-Whole-Whole-Half-Whole. That way if you stumble upon an unusual chord while messing around, or if you are trying to create harmony around that or finding melodies within that key that helps taking the guessing game out of that too or to help you navigate and find your way.
