Pompeii's Victims Were Never Who We Thought — DNA Rewrote the Most Famous Casts

You have almost certainly seen them. An adult with a small child gathered close, a heavy gold bracelet on the wrist. Two figures lying side by side in what looks unmistakably like a final embrace. For more than 150 years these casts have been captioned as a mother shielding her child and two sisters holding onto one another. In November 2024, DNA was read from the bone fragments still sealed inside them, and neither caption survived. This video covers the actual research: the Current Biology study led by Elena Pilli of the University of Florence, with David Reich at Harvard and Alissa Mittnik at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. Fourteen casts sampled, five yielding usable genome-wide data. At the House of the Golden Bracelet, the adult holding the child is genetically male — and the child is not related to him within three degrees. At the House of the Cryptoporticus, the pair long described as sisters included a male, and the two shared no recent maternal ancestry. The video also covers what nobody knows: three serious competing explanations for what these people actually were to each other, including the findings from Estelle Lazer's 2021 CT imaging work showing the casts were substantially manipulated and "creatively restored" by 19th-century hands. Plus the larger result that dwarfs the individual corrections — all five sequenced Pompeiians derived their ancestry largely from recent eastern Mediterranean immigrants, clustering not with Iron Age Italians or Etruscans but with Levantine and North African populations. And one strange detail from the same house: a silver denarius of Titus, recovered in 1974, that sits at the center of a still-unresolved argument about whether Vesuvius erupted in August or October. None of this makes that moment smaller. A man carrying a child who was not his son is not a lesser story.
