He was talking about 'Miljonprogrammet.' The Swedes built 1 million homes in 10 years to solve the housing shortage way back in the 1965 to 1974.

I totally agree with that first point. I'm born Swedish, but my roots are in southern europe. As I get older I notice the difference between me and typical Swedes more and more. I am just a bit more welcoming to random conversations with strangers, random interactions with neighbors, than what is the norm here. And I too have noticed how amazing older Swedish people are, much more welcoming, much easier to talk to than my own generation of Swedes.

The structure he’s talking about from WWII is part of Per Albin-linjen or the Skåne Line.
It was a 310-mile coastal defense network built in southern Sweden during World War II. Named after our prime minister at the time.
It ran along the southern and southwestern coasts of Sweden.
It included over 1,000 concrete pillboxes and bunkers spaced 300 to 400 meters apart.
They were decommissioned during the 1990s and 2000s but a lot of the actual structures are still around.

He also mentions having lived in Helsingborg (where I live) and it is one of the older named cities in Sweden and is mentioned in a letter from 1085. We don’t have a bridge to Denmark, but ferries. So it’s just a 20 min trip with the ferry and you’ll be in the very cosy city Helsingör in Denmark.

In the north most of the houses are equipped with heat pumps to keep the electricity cost down during winter. Those can be run in reverse as an AC in the worst days of the, very short, summer.

He's talking about architecture from the 50's and 60's here in Sweden, that he doesn't like. Soviet looking concrete style eyesores, and I 100% agree with him 🤣

He lives on the fancy side of town :)
I went on an 8 day Interrail train vacation this summer, travelled to germany, the netherlands, france, boat to england, went to a wedding, eurostar train via the channel tunnel to belgium, back to germany, and a short stop in denmark before getting back to Sweden. The train ticket and bookings was around €400 all in all. The boat from france to england was €40, (but can be much more expensive).
I found decent hotels for around €70 a night, with AC and all.
6 countries with 5 languages in just over a week for less than €1000.
Oh, and the train from belgium to germany even had a bar.

About the swedish "ugly" architecture period - during the 70' and beginning of 80' we had an acute shortage of housing, so we built a lot of cheap ugly buildings to fix that. It's called "miljonprogrammet" (the million program), and it was rushed to house as many people as possible.

We can just drive from Sweden to Netherlands crossing both Denmark and Germany in between in same day.

In swedish the concrete build is called: ett värn = like a foxhole, pillbox in english. It was to take shelter from attacs and also to be protected when shooting at the enemy.( if I got it right?).
