  I've observed that it is not necessarily those who position themselves here or there that gets people promoted. The system is not based on merit but on who knows you and if they LIKE you.

  You’re stuck when your manager is threatened of you and deliberately minimize your contribution and never take your name in any leadership meetings.

  I never applied for promotion. My director literally said “you should go for promotion, there’s a round next month”. I knew then it had effectively been decided and I had to just not mess it up.<br><br>Leadership look years ahead and try to position people they identify quite early on. <br><br>My next director saw me as a threat and tried to completely derail my career so it goes both ways. It’s fairly arbitrary

  I mostly agree with what stated in this video. Some corporate cultures, however, discourage their low-ranked staff from getting promoted.
