Fascinating interview. Bob Lutz has an outsized personality.

My only beef is the number of ads. It is incessant, takes away the pleasure of listening

Great to see Bob so lucid at 93 - thanks for doing this interview - the last time I saw him was at Lotus HQ in Ann Arbor over a decade ago (it was great to see an 80 something pulling up to our meeting in a new Corvette) - 3 points: 1. Bob touched on this but didn't discuss the fact that, yes, higher specific energy batteries can maintain range at less cost and reduced weight but they also feed into mass de-compounding where entire vehicle systems, e.g., suspensions, can now be reduced in size and weight to capitalize on the heaviest component of an EV being substantially lighter; at Lotus we theorized that 30% total vehicle mass reductions were possible due to holistic mass de-compounding and published an 800 page, peer reviewed, study documenting this number; the study was funded by CARB and used by the EPA for 2025 FE regulation development; 2. Bob alluded to the US needing to lower worker pay to compete with the Chinese; per AI, the current US CEO/worker pay ratio is 285:1 (2024): in 1978 it was 31:1; in Germany today, it is around 50:1; it is about 42:1 in France; perhaps US companies need to consider reducing executive compensation to European levels rather than trying to erode the US middle class purchasing power and the US economy by targeting Chinese hourly rates; the high US executive pay, roughly 5x higher than European countries; is arguably a factor in reduced US international competitiveness; 3. the US has some of the lowest rate labor in the world, the immigrants who perform tasks US workers won't, e.g., picking fruit and vegetables in hot weather with no benefits and very low hourly rates; current deportation policies have driven much of this labor force out of the US leaving US crops at risk due to a shortage of willing US workers. It is a loss that Bob isn't still running an American OEM; his clarity and common sense, obviously still intact, helped create great automobiles and high profits.

We love you, Bob. You brought my favorite GM cars to market, from the CTS, Pontiac GT8, to the Solstice, to the EV1, and the Chevy volt/ Cadillac ELR. And on and on....And then there is all your work at Chrysler, rescuing that company from demise, with the Chrysler 300 M, Viper, and many more. If I wasn t owning a Cadillac CTS 3.6, I would own a Chrysler 300 M or Hemi. And I really wanted a Cadillac ELR, if only it was RWD. How come these are all products with your involvement. You are a hero to the US Auto Industry.
