Matt really really didn't like this situation, Brolin does a good job with the face expression of letting a partner down.

Brolin did a great job portraying "They need you until they don't....". He knows on any op he could be the one getting "cut".

Matt was crushed in this scene. He was letting a brother down.

Ofc we know how he truly felt at the end. Brothers>everything else.

Good blocking in this scene.
Matt takes the call fully facing the viewer, presenting the challenge to us, but he's framed by the cage behind him - in reality he's the prisoner of his orders. Alejandro, facing away, is seemingly between the light and the darkness, but we know the day is dawning, and he's already made his mind about saving the girl.

why the line "luck doesn't live this side of the border" was cut from the movie?

Alejandro looked at the girl as he was protecting his daughter this one last time! So he had a change of heart and wanted to make sure she got somewhere safe and never deal with cartel shit ever again and escape that life

It's interesting when you remember that he killed two sons of a cartel boss in the first film in cold blood. But the daughter reminds him too much of his daughter.

I wonder if Alejandro hadn’t been shot by the cartel if Matt would actually kill him
