10 Lost Old West Mines Nobody Has Ever Found

#LostMines #OldWest #WesternHistory The strangest lost mines of the Old West were not always based on rumor. Some began with real ore. A dead Army sergeant carried a crude map after fifty pounds of rich Arizona ore had already been recovered. A teenage ranch hand in Texas returned with gold in his hand after his employers laughed at him. Thomas Rhoads deposited thousands of dollars in gold in early Utah records, yet nobody has ever proved where his later gold came from. And somewhere in the Black Rock country, one piece of supposed silver was carried out, molded into a button — then lost in the San Francisco fire before anyone could properly test it. The gold was sometimes real. The way back was what disappeared. This video follows 10 lost Old West mines whose locations have defeated prospectors, historians, newspapers, government surveys, and generations of treasure hunters. The trail runs through Arizona’s Granite Wash country, Big Bend, California’s Turtle Mountains and Death Valley, Utah’s Uintas, Wyoming’s Bighorns, the Kofa Mountains, Anza-Borrego, and the Black Rock Desert. Along the way, the evidence gets messy. Wyoming once printed the Lost Cabin Mine on an official state map, even though later research found no Army record supporting the famous story behind it. California erected a historical landmark for Pegleg Smith while openly calling him a “spinner of tall tales.” Newspapers repeatedly announced that the Lost Frenchman and Breyfogle mines had finally been found — only to quietly start searching again. And some searches ended far worse than embarrassment. Men disappeared. Prospectors died in the desert. Peter Lassen and Edward Clapper were shot while searching for the Lost Hardin Silver. Thomas Cover vanished while hunting Pegleg Smith’s black gold. Entire camps were built around supposed discoveries and abandoned when the ore failed. What makes these stories endure is not simply missing treasure. It is that so many began with something tangible: nuggets, assayable ore, recorded gold deposits, an abandoned cash balance, a map, a gunsight, or a witness who swore he had stood on the ground himself. Ten mines. Plenty of evidence that somebody found something. And no confirmed road back. Which one do you think actually existed — the Lost Soldier Mine, Bill Kelley’s gold, the Rhoades Mine, Breyfogle’s ledge, Pegleg Smith’s black nuggets, or Hardin’s lost silver?
