Cregan Stark lays back on his bed, his old bones creaking. Why couldn't he have died in battle like Jace? He hated being the Old Man of the North. There was nothing he could fight against. No enemy, no beast, just the inevitable encroachment of time. All he could do was wait. Old Cregan (fondly): I wonder if I'll get to see Jace again. cough Brave bastard. I still owe him a good punch. The one I gave him for breaking Sara's heart wasn't nearly hard enough. cough cough. But then we'll go on a hunt like we did and all will be forgotten. I wish we could have been brothers in truth, my friend. At least you died bravely. Swallowing, Cregan closes his eyes, and death takes him. Then, he hears a woman cooing over him. Cregan tries to raise his hands, but he couldn't move. Vainly, he struggles to make sense of what is going on, then he sees a lady with red hair looking down on him. Catelyn (exhausted): Ned said that he wanted to name his son after Robert. Robb Stark has a good sound to it. Something pulls Cregan into the depths of the mind he was inhabiting. The Old Gods weren't done with him, apparently. Shame, he had been looking forward to seeing Arra Norrey and Black Aly again. Though, what an afterlife would look like with his first and second wives was beyond his knowledge. That is the last thought Cregan has before he's swallowed by sleep. Robb looks out the window, eyes fixed on the winter town. He remembered Jacaerys flying down on Vermax, finding him with his sister Sara, feeling so bitter after the boy's actions and death that he'd delayed marching out until near the end of the War of Succession. He also remembered going down to King's Landing to punish the traitors and save Jace's brother Aegon. Aemon the Dragonknight also featured in his memories, a great knight, very talented. He almost wished they could have really crossed blades. Dark Sister against Ice, now that would have been a fight worthy of a song. He also recalled each of his three wives; Arra Norrey, his childhood sweetheart, Black Aly Blackwood, the love of his middle years, and finally Lynara, the wife of the twilight of his life. The first two had died before him, different reasons both times, and he had mourned them in turn. Shaking his head, Robb walks down to the yard. When he does, he finds a familiar face waiting for him. Young Robb: Jace? That you? Young Jon: Robb, it's Jon. Why'd you think my name is Jace? Young Robb: Sorry. Don't know what came over me. Maybe I remembered a name you said. Young Jon (skeptically): All right… Well, I'm Aemon the Dragonknight. Young Robb: And I'm Cregan Stark, The Wolf of the North, defend yourself, Dragonknight. For hours, the two boys play together, reenacting the great duels of the past, though most often they are Cregan and Aemon. Finally, at the height of the duel, Jon blurts out. Young Jon: I'm Lord of Winterfell! Something inside Robb clicks into place and something else rises inside him. An older, stronger will than his own. Robb/Cregan(sternly): Do you want to usurp me? Young Jon: No, sorry. It just slipped out. I… Robb/Cregan: I was usurped a long time ago. I won't let that happen again. Young Jon: Robb, I'd never do that to you. You're my brother! I didn't mean it. At that point, Robb seizes back control from whatever had possessed him, and pushes it down into the depths of his mind. Shaking, Robb pulls his brother into his arms and holds him close. Young Robb: I'm sorry, Jon. I don't know what came over me. That was wrong of me. Young Jon: It's all right, Robb. What happened there? Young Robb: I don't know, I'll have to think about it. We're probably done for the day. Sound good? Jon nods and Robb walks away, trying to make sense of the myriad memories that are swirling inside his head. It didn't make sense, why had he snapped at Jon? He had to figure this out. Trying to get his thoughts together, he heads to the Godswood and puts his hand against the heart tree’s trunk. #gameofthrones #gameofthroneswhatif #whatif
