Germany here. When I lived in Berlin (West) as a young man, Kachelofen were still quite common in older buildings - and Berlin has a lot of them. They not only gave a comfortable warmth ... if handled properly and maintained after some years (professional cleaning of the inside) they will last for at least several decades. Most the kachelofen we used were build up shortly after WWII, as Berlin had been hardley destroyed by city bombing. But I have seen kachelofen of the wilheminian time, too, with elaborated decoration - and still in daily use. At eye height kachelofen usually had such a iron shed (30x40 cm) with doors. The temperature in the shed is around 80°C - the perfect temperatur to keep food warm, and that's what these sheds were used for traditionally. We fired briquetts of brown coal, which were delivered by the DDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik, GDR, German Democratic Republic = East Germany) to Berlin (West), within the Berlin Wall and controled by the allies.
