It Was Just a Portrait of the Vestry Children — Until You Notice One Isn't Standing on the Floor

This portrait dates from 1893 — eight years after the twins' discovery and five years into their placement with the county commissioner's family. It shows five children: the commissioner's three biological children and the two Vestry twins, arranged in the informal composition of a family group portrait taken in the parlor rather than a studio. The historical society's 2021 digitization flagged the portrait for a researcher alert whose criterion the digitization coordinator noted in four words in the catalogue record's general notes field. The four-word criterion concerns one of the five children's position relative to the parlor floor. Four children are standing on the floor. Their feet are visible in the portrait's lower register, making contact with the floor surface in the standard way that standing subjects make contact with the surface they occupy. The fifth child — identifiable by position and by the family resemblance documentation in the commissioner's genealogical records as one of the Vestry twins — is not making contact with the floor. The feet are visible. The floor is visible below them. The space between the feet and the floor is not the space that the portrait's distance from the camera and the floor's surface would produce through perspective. 😨 The researcher alert produced three independent photographic assessments whose reports are in the historical society's researcher file. The first assessment attributed the gap to perspective distortion. The second assessment, commissioned after the first assessment's conclusion was challenged by the digitization coordinator's measurements, attributed the gap to a photographic artifact. The third assessment — commissioned by the historical society's director after the first two assessments produced contradictory conclusions — attributed the gap to neither. The third assessment's conclusion is one paragraph whose first sentence states what the gap is not and whose second sentence states what the measurement shows. This video examines the three assessments, the second sentence, and the Vestry twins' documentary record — completing the Vestry photographic series from the 1885 discovery through the 1893 portrait and connecting the floor gap to the shadow series, the Nettle twins, and the Appalachian photographic anomaly archive's most geometrically specific entry. If you are drawn to true Appalachian horror, dark history, paranormal photography, and the third assessments whose second sentences state what the measurement shows rather than what the professional formation accounts for — this video reads all three and the second sentence. Five children. Four on the floor. One with visible space between feet and surface. Three assessments. Two contradictory. Third assessment: one paragraph, two sentences. The second sentence is the measurement's finding. 👇 Comment below — completing the Vestry photographic series across the 1885 discovery, the multi-year absence from photographs, the photographer's ledger, and now the 1893 floor gap, what complete picture does the Vestry documentary record produce, and what does the third assessment's second sentence tell us about the category of presence the photographic medium is and is not registering across the Vestry series? We read every single reply.
