It is like watching Out of Town with Jack Hargreaves all over again. Brilliant, Simon.

It was Watching your stick making video that got me started making them. I now make around 8 to 10 sticks a year which I provide for free to old age pensioners in my locality.
Nice one Simon, great video.

Hello Simon, as a wood turner I believe that the markings on the shaft that you thought might be due to snails is in fact known as 'spalting' which is a fungal infection. I am always amazed to see food chopping boards offered by woodworkers that are made made from spalted beech. Definitly not food safe...

I cut local English Holly shoots for my sticks. My tools, carried in a small rucksack, are a folding pull saw, a machete with a 10 inch blade and a folding Army entrenching tool. The latter for removing soil and duff from root segments. The best time for cutting is fast approaching.

Stick making is a fascinating hobby, there is so much to learn and there is something about working with your hands that’s therapeutic, when the hands and mind are engaged. Just getting out amongst the trees makes you feel better. Occasionally you can find a stick where the vine has entwined the shank and that can make for an attractive stick if your not retaining the bark.

Your spot on there m8 about cutting sticks in the autumn and winter. I sometimes see good sticks in the summer and I think, I'll come back in the winter months to see what its like after a full summer of growth. Spot on about the safety gear.

I harvest the odd shank from the woods behind my place of work at lunchtime..loads of coppiced hazel and Holly and elder..I put them in a fishing rod bag so that I can get them home on my motorbike.
I’ve recently cut a perfectly straight staff of Holly that is about 15ft long and like a fishing rod.
I’m going to cut lengths off it tomorrow and get them home on!

I enjoyed the video. I live in Arizona and don’t have the tree growth you do. I look for Aspen groves up in the mountains. They get really thick and will choke out the younger trees. Those trees can get up to two inches thick and are really tall and straight. They will lose their outer bark before they fall down. They’re mostly dried and you can sometimes get three good sized walking sticks from them. Strong and light and great for carving. And since they’re dead you’re not cutting down any of the love with.

Simon you have been blessed with many gifts, when I first found your channel as I waited for a new film to come out I went back and watched every one of your past films. I loved watching you make the walking stick it was absolutely beautiful and if I remember correctly you had a contest and gave one lucky follower one of your walking sticks. Hopefully we get to watch you make another one of your beautiful sticks. ❤
