It's called a blow out. While drilling for oil you hit a high pressure pocket. It can be anything. If you can't control the pressure release and inject a filler, the ground can collapse (sink hole). At that point you have a bunch of loose material that allows the gas to slowly seep out. This was learned way back in the very early days of oil drilling. Many lives were lost. The rigs would begin to sink, fall over or apart causing sparks and boom. That's where a man named Red Adair came in. He mastered the art of putting them out.
