Heya. This is SRC543. I'm a regular on Bootleggamescentral and one of the closer things to an expert on this game. Thanks and great job on the video! Our community is generally very critical of the unlicensed game content that pops on on Youtube but I'm really happy that you did this well researched deep dive and with such positive regard for the developer. There is a minor factual error that NOACs were fundamental to bringing the NES worldwide. These are essential to the console's history, but there were hardware clones prior to the NOAC's creation in 1993 and it was a while longer before they became the standard.

I also appreciate you bringing up the differences between the Lugia translation and original game. One thing I'd like to correct is the experience formula isn't really fixed so much as it's different. The original release begins with normal-ish level ups then slows down horrendously in the mid 30's. As a result, the original version is actually easier than the Lugia release for most stages of an any% playthrough, since you wouldn't expect your Pokemon to break level 40 unless they began at that level. However, it is much, much easier to level up a Pokemon to 100 in the Lugia patch should you actually want to do that.

One last thing I wish you covered in this video are the mechanic differences with the original Gameboy release. Besides the Gen II stuff added in, the way the game plays is fundamentally changed due to a glitch in the game's programming. Pokemon target THEIR OWN defenses for attacks rather than their opponent's. This makes glass cannons and Pokemon with high HP much more desirable than the official games, but it also makes a fair bit of higher level Pokemon kind of a joke when paired with seemingly slower damage scaling in general. Notably, Omanyte fits in this category because its "net" special attack, its special attack minus special defense, is a quite respectable 35.

I could go on about these changes for a while, but I recommend ya'll check out the repository I put together for this game with KingPepe's assistance. It has a bunch of useful stuff including learnsets, an approximated damage calculator, and a rough outline I used for a proof of concept speedrun. (Will reply to this message with direct a link because Youtube has a tendency to auto-moderate outside links, unfortunately. It's also included in my Video here if that gets deleted: https://youtu.be/XPxaqbnBcvI)

That 7 in 1 to 500 in 1 cartridge inflation joke was so good. Haven't even finished the video, it was just so great it needed textual recognition immediately lol.

I am Taiwanese and studied translation in graduate school, and when my professor asked the class to each pick one foreign work and write a brief summary about how it was translated into Chinese, I picked the Pokemon franchise (and wrote some of the same things this video explained). And to my surprise, my professor was one of those who didn't even know Pokemon has video games despite being very learned otherwise.

yeah, okay that "adjusted for inflation, that would be a 500-in-1 game cart today" joke was top notch.

Nobody forced this team to refine the game mechanics and come up with their own story beats. I can't imagine doing so helped them sell any more copies. You know they did it for the love of the game.
