007 First Light Disappointed Me, and Here's Why (Review)

Just being honest about my own experience with 007 First Light through my subjective lens, as is the case with every video. You wouldn't rather I just said I loved everything about it just because that's what a lot of people think, right? It's fine to have different critical opinions out there—just because I was less than thrilled with the game doesn't mean you're wrong for liking it. Just something to bear in mind. Thanks for watching anyway!

to me, it felt like the studio's attempt to take what they know about Hitman, and merge it with the mechanical beats from something like Uncharted. The "cinematic movie game"

While I'm not surprised they went the Uncharted style route I am disappointed they didn't do something more ambitious that more directly built of their work on Hitman.
Like imagine the story as a series of Hitman style sandbox levels and a number of objectives. The bad guys don't initially know you're investigating them but as you're spotted more and more across multiple missions this escalates. For example first they know there's a spy, then they know it's an MI6 agent and finally Bond specifically. This escalations increases security and makes some infiltration methods harder or impossible, e.g. if they know the enemy is Bond then wearing a disguise that doesn't cover your face makes going through security checkpoints or charming someone at the front desk a no-go because they know who you are.
This would also be an opportunity to add henchmen as special versions of Hitman's enforcers who have unique abilities that affect how you interact with them. For example Jaws would be impossible to fight hand to hand because he'd grab and bite Bond, and is only slowed or staggered by gunfire but is slow moving. This means dealing with him requires avoidance, distraction or using an environmental hazard to more effectively neutralise the henchman (henchmen come back in later levels). However successful neutralisations lead to that henchmen learning for next time. Using the Jaws example again, if Jaws is dispatched by drop a heavy object on him, the next time he might dodge or catch/punch the object, with the chance of it being ineffective increasing the more player tries it to encourage variety and resourcefulness.
Obviously my idea might be too much for whatever budget they had, assuming it's even feasible at all, and doesn't diminish that what we got in the end looks pretty good for a Bond game.
(Still waiting for remaster/remakes of 007 Agent Under Fire and Nightfire...)

7:54 honestly as someone who had never seen them before and just started watching through all the 28 Bond movies rn (partially in prep for this game), it's actually been shocking how anyone ever saw Bond as a social stealth character because outside of like 2 movies, Bond is a TERRIBLE spy (i mean, his most famous line is him revealing his identity to all the villains.) and his spy stuff barely lasts 10 minutes of the movie (and it is often treated as fluff before you get to the "real movie".) before it just becomes an action movie. noted exceptions include like On Her Majesty's Secret Service ig since his infiltration there at least lasts 30 minutes of the movie and a couple others that go on for similar times or at least matter substantially. but as a whole, they've been action movies since day one that pretend to have a spy in them doing spy stuff. so IO being the choice to do these felt bizarre already, given how sandboxy and actually stealthy the Hitman games can be, but glad to know it's about as awkward a transtion as i expected then ig.

Crazy to find someone with a take that isn’t “I loved it! It was the DNA of the Hitman franchise, but wrapped up in a movie plot! It felt like playing one of the films!”. I played the game with my girlfriend watching the entire playthrough. First, I talked at my girlfriend about why I felt that my 70 USD were stolen (because it’s just uncharted with a barely James Bond plot attached, poorly), after which, I went to look up reviews. I was incredibly surprised to see the same points about it being “cinematic” and “fun” and “it’s like uncharted, but that’s a GOOD thing” and all sorts of other nonsense being brought up over and over again, in a similar cadence, with a tone that sounds almost apologetic, but admitting that it can be a “fun romp at times” and I loved it, 9/10!

I think what actually happened with this game, is that the James Bond IP is a very strongly protected one, and the rights holders are working EXTREME overtime to blow this one over with a notoriously angry audience (gamers). God bless IOI, but I can’t help but feel for their company leads, who must understand the quality of what they made to be subpar, but be beholden to an easy payday in the form of this licensed, safe, shareholder-friendly drivel. The life of an executive, especially if you have eyes and ears and a brain and a heart to parse the decisions you have to make in that position (which a lot don’t, to be fair), is definitely a tough one.

Thanks for the vid! Very refreshing indeed.

Weirdly, I felt the opposite. As a big fan of the Hitman games, I was concerned with its marketing. But, I really enjoyed my playthrough.

Hopefully the next game is more sandboxy though :) I would prefer more agency

Seeing these "underwater motions" with this melee combat
really cements how much ahead Capcom is with their animations work

They keep trying to make Absolution 2. It was smart to attach 007 to it this time.

It had some good parts but a lot of it was meh for me. Lots of yapping, lots of restrictions in the open areas. Using the environment felting enemies heads was the best part.

The walking and talking with some action after a cut scene pissed me off that i sold a $70 game for $35 on ebay the next day. 😊

i'm always saddened by games like these. they seem to really impress people but i really like PLAYING a game and it doesn't matter how many explosions, deep conversations, or impressive parkour gymastics are happening if all i am doing is pressing forward.

I don’t know dude. Hitman is a sandbox game, which is why Absolution was so wrong. But Bond has always been about stylish action with espionage backdrops. I think the game nails that feeling despite some flaws. Expecting Hitman 4 but with a bond skin is silly. Just because they have similar vibes (spy/assassin stuff) doesn’t mean the mechanics of the game should be the same. Expecting IOI to basically just do the same thing again is also very reductive. They went in a different direction to their usual sandbox worlds for better or worse that should be praised.
