At first, I was confused by the narrator's description of the Hellcat's armament. He said: "six-point-five-zero caliber Browning machine guns." I thought to myself: "6.50 caliber?" I've never heard of that. Then I realized he meant "six .50-caliber machine guns." When writing a script for an AI narrator, words should be spelled out as "six fifty-caliber machine guns," so the AI narrator will say the words correctly instead of saying "six-point-five-zero caliber."

You guys don't understand Japanese thinking about combat defense. Their thinking about turning performance meant everything however vertical performance was ignored until they ran into P38's that could out climb or dive the Japanese fight And when then the F6F showed up the game was over.

Really, the Hellcat had already had been in action for a year before this. The attack on Truk was the first time a large group of Hellcats were used.

The initial encounters of Hellcat vs Zero was at raid on Wake Island in 1943. Ensign Robert Duncan vs Warrant officer Toshiuki Sueda with nine victories. Sueda went into a vertical climb. He thought it was a wildcat and he'd climb until the Wildcat stalls, turn over then bring it down. The problem was that the Hellcat followed him in the climb and blew him apart. I suspect Imperial Naval intelligence did not had a clue that the USN had replaced the wildcat with a brand new model and in numbers, along with trained naval aviators.

I see some criticisms posted, but I say this is not meant to be some flawless scholarly tomb. But for an avid amateur history buff like myself, this overview is utterly jaw dropping! They say WWII produced “America’s Greatest Generation.” This amazing history piece brings this home!

Hey Japanese high commend. Instead of throwing eggs at a brick wall, that invincible task force has a supply train all the way across the Pacific.
