The Armenian historian Lewond recounts the campaign of the Armenian aristocrat Tacat Andzewatsi in Byzantine service under Emperor Constantine V
Lewond writes that Tacat displayed bravery "In the land of the SARMATIANS called BULKAR-K.
This is the explicit PRIMARY SOURCE testimony that the Bulkars were identified as SARMATIANS by an 8th century contemporary historian.
Ghewond. I have made this video as nuanced and balanced as possible, and hope that you guys and gals enjoy both the information that was given as well as my style. It took a lot of time to recreate some of these historical people and scenes. I tried to include as much historical imagery as possible, but as you might know, there is little content available. Almost all of the paintings that are supposed to depict the ancient Bulgars were made centuries later, anyway. Therefore, I oriented myself on the text descriptions about the Bulgars from ancient sources, but also on the clothing, hairstyles etc. of other steppe peoples of the Ponto-Caspian steppe.

The Volga Bulgars were mentioned twice in the video. Maybe it would be a good idea to check out their history in the future. What do you think?

    War with the Byzantines
Agathias (c. 579–582) wrote:
...all of them are called in general Scythians and Huns in particular according to their nation. Thus, some are Koutrigours or Outigours and yet others are Oultizurs and Bourougounds... the Oultizurs and Bourougounds were known up to the time of the Emperor Leo (457–474) and the Romans of that time and appeared to have been strong.

It is good to think about the fact that the emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire personally went on a campaign, which shows the power and influence of the Bulgarians. The other thing is that they immediately began to build a capital of stone, as well as the longest rampart in Europe, which is now in Romania. These are people who came with the knowledge of great statesmen and builders. They were not just some nomads.

As well as knowledge of the land they were entering. Not to mention that there were huge masses of the local population who obeyed the Bulgarians and even entered into an alliance with them against the influence of the Eastern Roman Empire, to which they were subjects at that time. Why did these tribes, these numerous local people, who were most likely at least 10-20 times more numerous than the Bulgarians, prefer the young state of the Bulgarians to remaining part of the Eastern Roman Empire?

Wherever Kubrat's sons set foot, they founded a state! With laws, with urban planning, with diplomacy, army, etc., all the attributes of a great state! These were not random people. The only people who founded several states at the same time and one of the oldest states in Europe, if not the oldest, that has never changed its name!

The ancient Bulgarians who lived in our lands created their own calendar. The Bulgarian calendar was reconstructed based on written historical data (Namelist of the Bulgarian Rulers) and on folk traditions and legends. An undoubted success for it was the official recognition by UNESCO in 1976, which recognized it as the most perfect in the world. The day of the winter solstice (December 21) in 5505 BC was adopted as the starting point of the calendar. 01-02-7530!

These were not random people at all!!!
