I can see how a basically intact identity could remain sane behind Servitor hardwiring of your nervous system, particularly after a lifetime growing up in a hive city and living in fear daily. Your body.is now doing just what your overlords want, automatically, under no threat of punishment, because everything that CAN be done to you, this side of death, HAS been done. You’re the Ghost in the Machine they made of you, riding along as you automatically stay out of trouble. The extreme , ongoing, waking nightmare of the Imperium is still all around you, but you’ve found a way to relax and watch the show.

Incidentally, the reason why they keep him awake and aware throughout the whole thing is that IRL neurosurgeons need to be able to talk to their patients during brain surgery so they can be sure that what they're doing is having the desired effect (admittedly in this case the purpose is supposedly to remove all traces of personality).
