  Unacceptable behavior and I would never tolerate that disrespect. That would be the last time they seen or spoke to us. Protecting your son is the most important duty a father has.

  When someone says their cruel behavior was a mistake or a misunderstanding, it is neither. It was a choice. A decision. My mother would make comments that a sibling's adopted children should be grateful.  I asked if she expected the other grandchildren to be 'grateful' and what exactly what that would that look like. She didn't say it to me again.

  Two  of  my  four  kids  are  adopted.  I wouldn't  put  up  with  behavior  like  that  for  six  minutes  let  alone  six  years.

  It was unfortunate that the protagonist kept trying with the family when they were never going to accept him. The wimps in the family who watched the awful mother blatantly disregard Jonah deserved more shame.  At least the father tried with Jonah.

  Growing up as a bastard, as which I was referred to because my father disappeared when he found out that my mother was expecting, I was treated exactly the same way. Now at 75 it still hurts to have been excluded again and again. I learned that I do not deserve to be respected or valued.
