WHY TRAVELLERS are AVOIDING this TOWN in North Queensland

Welcome back! This week we continue our North Queensland outback caravan adventure, travelling with our Next Gen Ford Ranger and Network RV caravan as we explore more incredible camps, historic gold mining towns and hidden places around Charters Towers and the Burdekin River. Our first stop is Macrossan Park, just outside Charters Towers in North Queensland. This donation campground sits right beside the Burdekin River and makes a great affordable camping option for caravanners travelling through the area. After setting up camp, we head down to explore the riverbanks and discover even more camping spots tucked away around Macrossan Park. From there, we hit the road towards Ravenswood, one of Queensland’s fascinating historic gold mining towns. Ravenswood is still home to a huge active gold mine today, but the town itself is a reminder of a very different era when thousands of people called this place home. We set up at the Ravenswood Caravan Park before heading out to explore the town’s gold mining history. There are old Queensland pubs, abandoned ruins, historic homesteads, rusting smelting equipment and relics scattered throughout the area. Some of these old ruins definitely make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time — and you might want to make sure that tetanus shot is up to date before exploring too closely! Bryce can’t resist ringing the bell at the old church before we head up to the Ravenswood lookout for an incredible view across the massive open-cut gold mine. Right beside the lookout we also discover an old Ravenswood cemetery, with historic graves showing just how far back the history of this North Queensland mining town goes. Leaving Ravenswood behind, we continue our Queensland caravan road trip to Mount Surround Campground, located just off the Bruce Highway. This peaceful campground is set around a lake with beautiful views and plenty of space to relax. At $30 a night for an unpowered site, it’s a great little stop for kicking back around the campfire, enjoying the scenery and cooking up a big curry for dinner.
