"I like- I like me." is one of my favorite moments of acting in history.

Steve Martin nailed it in the first 30 seconds of this video. John Candy wasn't acting there. He was hurt...and his delivery of "I like me" was from the heart.

The way he hesitates when he says, "I like.....I like me," is pure genius.

Candy should’ve been nominated for an Oscar for this role.

The funniest people you meet in your day to day life, are in fact some of the most broken souls you will meet in your day to day life. That ability to laugh and to joke is a direct personal response to having to fight their own hurt.

I think I made it about 53 seconds into the John Candy documentary and was already in tears. I was 13 when he died and it's the first time I can remember being affected by someone's death that wasn't a family member or a friend. I grew up on Uncle Buck and The Great Outdoors. We must have watched Cool Runnings 7 different times at school. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is an all time classic. I'm glad he spent the time he got with us, but it's hard not to wonder what could have been.

John Candy had the superpower of making people think twice before being jerks. R.I.P. one of the real legends, best of the best.

My father worked with John Candy’s uncle in Toronto back in the 1960s and 70s and when SCTV first came on TV back in the 1970s, 12-year old me did this pencil drawing portrait of John Candy with a note on the back telling him how much my dad and I loved the show. Well … the drawing ended up in John Candy’s hands (by way of my father and Candy’s uncle) on Christmas Day north of Toronto.

And wouldn’t you know it … but John Candy calls me up on the telephone at my house on Christmas Day to say thanks for the drawing and for being a big fan of the show. I was completely surprised (my dad clearly knew this could happen) and I chatted with John Candy (and a variety of his soon-to-be very famous characters that he adapted to the context of talking about spending a hilarious Christmas Day with his own family ) for at least 15 minutes. On Christmas Day while the man was visiting his own family he makes time to call a kid who’s a fan and really engage with him.

I’ll never forget that and what it told me about what John Candy the man must truly have been like to put time aside for some kid he didn’t even know because his uncle asked him to … to call the son of a guy his uncle worked with at an insurance company … a young kid who loved his show. On Christmas Day he made time for someone he’d never actually meet face to face and make this like … gift of comedy .. for the kid who made a fan portrait of him a couple months earlier. Amazing gift from an amazing man.

I remain a big fan of SCTV and John Candy to this day. Now my own family loves it all now too.

No matter how many times I see this movie, I can't help but openly weep at the "I like me" scene, and the scene at the end where Del comes clean. Just rips me apart.

Runner-up -- Uncle Buck. He's in the car, about to head to the track. But he knows he can't.

John Candy is just one of those guys that radiated charisma and heart. Doesn't matter what his role is, he manages to steal the movie. Case in point, despite having seen Home Alone two-hundred times too many, his scenes as Gus Polinski (Polka King of the Midwest) makes me laugh every single time. RIP, king.
