The ultimate handshake on this film was Frank Darabont watching it with Stephen King, who wrote the original story and had a much less horrible ending. King had them holed up in a restaurant, a trucker stop, and the main character thinking about what he's going to do with the gun. The movie made King weep, and then tell Frank that the movie is an improvement. King wishes he'd written the story the way the movie turned out. That is chef's kiss.
