  He definitely said &quot;stupid fucks&quot; but hard to tell who it was aimed at because of the cut. I want to say it was towards whoever threw those into the river. But maybe it was because you kept going after finding the first one.<br>Honestly either way I don&apos;t fault the guy. That is a ridiculous and dangerous situation. In cases like that sometimes the mouth filter doesn&apos;t work because of adrenaline. He seemed reasonable after stepping away from the mortar.

  Never found anything like this, but remember when I was young, my father bought a farm. We were city people trying our hand at farming. I think I was 11; my two older brothers were 13 and 14. We were still new on the farm; we explored the back of an old machine shed and found dynamite. We thought it was that but did not understand why there was an oil-like substance dripping off the sticks. My brothers grabbed two sticks, there was primer cord by the sticks, so being young and dumb, we took them to the river, put the wicks in, and threw them after lighting the wicks. Needless to say, there was a large explosion. We sat in shock, but about 15 minutes later decided to throw the second stick; as we did so, one of the county cops showed up and said someone called about an explosion. The thing went off and covered him, the car with mud and water. We did what most boys that age would do; we ran. <br>When we got back home, our father was with a very unhappy cop. Surprisingly we did not get in trouble, but he did have us show him and my father where we found the sticks. He and my father turned white when they saw the sticks were sweating, we were told to get my mother and sisters, and we all went to the neighbors. About 3 hours later, up comes a truck; they put some type of foam on the sticks (we did not see them do it, but it was all over where the sticks were when they left. Did not know until much later how lucky we were they did not blow up in our hands. <br>This happened in the 70s, if it happened today, the reaction would have been much different, but that was a different time. Oh, and we did get chewed out by my father that night, told us if we ever found something like this again, we were to tell him.

  Looks like a 20mm cannon round. &nbsp;I would not say to dangerous in he condition they were in. &nbsp;Rounds like this were designed to be really stable. &nbsp;They go through torture just getting to the gun barrel in the feed mechanisms. &nbsp;Cool find!

  They are not mortar rounds they look more like antiaircraft rounds from maybe a Bofors Gun. But this is just my opinion.

  <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VaUS0bqcCd0&amp;t=270">4:30</a> The powder inside the mortar shell is white, so it&apos;s probably potassium nitrate -which could potentially explain the hissing noise as the powder may be reacting with water.

  If you are worried about the temperature changing, lower it back into the water and tie off the rope so they stay just in the water. Quit pulling more of them out until there is someone that can properly dispose of them at hand. Quit handling them if you are worried about their stability. That was a bonehead move.
