I let my girls rest from egg laying during the winter months; it's brought on by light levels as well. They have a nice cozy coop with deep liter. During this time, they rebuild their bones and loose fatty deposits that can cause them to die of heart attacks. My laying hens regularly live to see 8-10 years of life (though they stop laying at about 4). The older girls I use as garden pest control. :)

I'd rather listen to the Amish themselves explaining their methods.

Really these videos would be better if they showed the actual building of the coup by the Amish.

My Amish neighbor gives his chickens warm water in the winter and has no fall off in egg production. His coop is well insulated with plenty of hay in the nests.

I can’t believe how in accurate this video is. I have been raising chickens for over 70 years and cold is not an issue. Egg production is based on hours of light not temperature.

We call our homemade coop...
"the Apartment".
My husband put a log perch in the middle. Some use it, some sit. As they perch or sit on their feet, keeps their feet warm + each other.
My bantams can go out daily unless it's windy & storming.
During normal rain they have a covered porch with a ramp & board so not required
to ever stand in water, and have quick access back inside, but can be out all day.
I do remove water bowls at night in winter bc if it freezes it would make it colder.
I give fresh warm water in the morning & they love it. 6-8 per coop.
My standard hen's feathers repel rain but most have enough sense to go inside on bad days. They love their digs, too. I use hardware cloth on all coops and lock at night from predators.
Mine are happy, happy chickens. All have hardware windows to look out under covered roof area. I can use clear covering during wind in daytime or black at night to prevent light.
No external heat or lights ever used. Have never lost a chicken in winter after 16 years doing this way.
Mine overall lay around 5+ years & then some will set/hatch eggs as older hens.
Hope this helps someone. ❤😊❤

When my dad was growing up at their place, they had a Stone fireplace outside the chicken co-op.And they had a rock about six foot long that went in the inside of the chicken coop

I hadn’t realized until now this is same producer that took 31 minutes to tell how Amish feed chickens.

I bought a property with a coop built. It looked well used but I hated roosting area. No nesting boxes just a variety of milk carriers and what not thrown down, stunk, hard to clean and I had no idea how many chickens the enclosed and roofed structure with outside enclosure included under roof. Its mountains, get cold , snows , but also quite warm in summer. Not insulated. Not off the ground in roosting area. I need to expand nesting to sell some eggs. Had no idea what was incorrect or how to determine to succeed. This video is excellent. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Keeping a light on in my chicken coop in winter and no added heat, even 2 windows open when it's below freezing, I still get good egg production if they are active walking around. Less than 14 hours of light a day or a sedentary life reduces egg production.

Fermenting feed, sprouted grains and deep litter help the birds keep up body heat inside the coop. Deep litter heats up as they deposit waste and it composts. Providing wind protection is paramount. Around the outdoor run I create a ventilated greenhouse which protects from inclement weather and wind, but doesn’t get hot. (Also protects against avian flu)

Amish also “water glass” their eggs so they have plenty in the winter
