In 2025 there's no point being nitpicky about SM vs AG, the better tube would be the one with less hours on it

Picking up a recapped and serviced rgb modded Toshiba 14af44 in a few days. Can’t wait!

My 14AF43 has 32k hours on it and it still looks fantastic and is super bright.

I literally have the same two models. I prefer the fit and finish of the Sony and the remote is adorable, but I prefer the picture of the Toshiba. To each their own. Great video!

Funny story, I saw a Sony KV-13FS100 at a recycling center but left it because the power cord was cut off and the case damaged (it had been tossed in a bin with other TVs). I later deeply regretted not picking it up, as I'm sure I could've repaired it. Then less than a year later, JUST while thinking about that set, I see a Toshiba 14AF46 sitting on the sidewalk! I kid you not, talk about weird coincidences in the universe! The Toshiba has some minor issues like lots of hours on it, phosphor-burn in and not the sharpest image, but the color and brightness look fantastic still! I have it physically rotated for vertical arcade games, very cool for 80's arcade classics! It doesn't hold a candle compared to my Sony WEGA KV-27FS12 for sharpness, since it's near PVM-quality, but it was a welcome find!

I've always gone after Trinitrons, but I may give Toshiba a chance. As it happens, I also have a Toshiba 20" flat-screen CRT with component kicking around, but it turns off within 1 second of powering on. Might be worth repairing if I can figure out what's wrong it with.

I used to have a 14AF44 for awhile. And tbh, as much as I love the apeture grille, a Toshiba slot mask has a nice soft look im fond of. But to each their own

I have the 24-in version of that Toshiba and absolutely love it, the Wii through component looks fantastic. Especially when playing SNES/NES games through and emulator and setting the video setting to 240p. Wouldn’t trade it for any other CRT in the world

Well said! Trinitrons are consistently good, but they aren't consistently the best! The lead was dominant in the early years, but the gap closed at the end. I have some phenomenal shadow mask sets that I prefer over many of my Trinitrons.

Great video! I have a 14AF and it's i-Art equivalent, and I absolutely LOVE them! I at one time had 4 of these CRTs, but sold two off to some very happy customers. Incredible units. They really make NES and Sega Master System games pop. Never had a KV-13FS, but I can imagine those units being awesome too.

And I see you are a man of culture! I have a 20" Panasonic Tau as my daily driver, haha. Subbed!

i recently got a 27 inch philips tube (shadow mask) from this vintage and it’s personally the best picture i’ve ever seen on a CRT that i’ve had more than a passing experience with. it’s also my first time running wii through component on a CRT and it just looks fantastic. my ideal setup back in the day!
