  The correct order to read the Elric novels is whichever order you can find them in a second hand bookshop.

  Dark Elves/Dark Eldar in Warhammer/40k are LITERALY Melnibonéans. The first Dark Elf sculpts for Warhammer Fantasy Battles were based on their Melnibonéan Knights sculpts.

  What I love most about Elric is, in spite of what he himself says, he isn’t cynical. He dares to hope for a brighter future, a better tomorrow. He is melancholy, depressed, tormented by loves lost and gained. He’s regretful and remorseful and self destructive but he is also, almost spitefully, hopeful. At any point Elric could have laid down, died, surrendered to Stormbringer or Ariac or any of the countless enemies he faced, but he didn’t. He pushed on. He lived and fought and loved even whenever scrap of his tortured soul wanted to just end. That’s why I love Elric, and why his friends love him too, I think.

  Stormbringer strengthened Elric by absorbing the souls of his enemies. It just preferred the souls of his friends.

  I discovered Elric and his universe while in high school (80s). During these years I consumed every book and article that was associated with this universe. One of the best ever and doesn&apos;t get nearly enough credit for being a founding force of Fantasy literature.

  Funnily enough, when you read the the <i>Elric of Melniboné</i> novels and short stories, Elric the sword-wielding sorcerer-king might be &quot;emo&quot; but he is is the <i>opposite</i> of an &quot;edgelord&quot;. He has a conscience, which makes him an oddity among the other Melnibonéans, and hates their decadence. He is brutally honest with himself about what he is, and how his frail health binds him to the hated cursed rune sword. <br>He is fascinated by the humans of the Young Kingdoms, and after he destroyed Imrryr the Dreaming City and his people, he dresses in their clothing and befriends a human thief and various other characters in the course of his travels (including travels in time). <br>He defies his patron Chaos God Arioch (who is just one of many Chaos Gods, but Arioch is the patron of the entire species of Melnibonéans and of Elric&apos;s royal bloodline specifically), but and joins the ranks of the Knights of Cosmic Balance for a brief while before he dies in the Last Battle.<br><br><br>And Moorcock&apos;s doesn&apos;t shy away from showing multiple times how physically helpless Elric is without either his medical drugs or Stormbringer&apos;s energy. Elric quickly faceplants every he loses Stormbringer/throws it away in disgust/the sword is taken away as Elric is taken prisoner, and can&apos;t do jack-sh*t and either has to be saved by his companions or has to beg Stormbringer to return to his hand.

  Mike&apos;s a really nice dude. He lived down the road from me in Bastrop, TX and I met him a couple of times while I was out jogging with my dog in the early aughts. Always loved his work - the Elric and Cornelius worlds are some of the richest tapestries in fantasy and I was enthralled by them as a teen in the 80s. Great overview of Elric here - kudos!

  Michael Moorcock will always be my favourite fantasy author, and Elric&apos;s Saga will always be my favourite fantasy book.

  Morecock had a big influence on early D&amp;D and it still echoes to this day. &nbsp;The alignment system grew out of his conflict between Law, Balance and Chaos. &nbsp;The Hand and Eye of Vecna were inspired by the Corum novels. &nbsp;I could go on but I’ll leave that as an exercise for the class.
