I've been sewing all my life. I realized within the first five minutes, when you took the time to hand tie the ends of the stitching, that this was going to be a first class operation. You are amazing. I'm old, but still remember as I learned on my mother's old treadle machine, "If it's worthwhile doing, it's worth-while doing it right, Barbara."

The stays alone are such a work of art. The initial close-up was soooo satisfying, so I'm THRILLED you added so many glam shots of them before they got covered <3

My mother was a self-taught clothing designer and seamstress who taught me to sew as soon as I could thread a needle, I think I was about 5 years old. She would give me fabric scraps from her own projects and I would create doll clothes from them, all hand sewn. Mom finally allowed me to graduate to using actual patterns and her sewing machine when I has about 10-11 years old, still using scraps and leftovers. I think I made my first human garment in 6th grade, a dress for myself.

My mom started out taking in sewing, mostly alterations, when I was about 10 years old. She slowly graduated to making custom clothing and by the time I was 14, when my parents divorced, she had enough clientele to support a family of 5 (herself, her mother, and her 3 daughters). All the time she was earning, she was also learning. She learned men's tailoring techniques and made custom men's suits, but also made just about anything that could be sewn on a sewing machine, including sails, tents, sleeping bags, and goose-down filled ski clothing, not to mention upholstery and windows. She eventually became best known for her custom designed and made wedding dresses, although along the way she also created clothing for various Hollywood celebs, with some of her creations being worn to The Oscars and being showcased in Women's Wear Daily.

Along my own sewing journey, I took every class my schools offered in advanced sewing techniques as well, including pattern drafting and tailoring. After graduating high school and before leaving home, I became her assistant, mostly in charge of hand sewing and finish details, as my hand work was by her own admittance far superior to hers. I had also by then begun to design my own clothing.

I left home at 22 and pretty much left my sewing career behind, although the first piece of furniture I bought for myself was a sewing machine, which I still have and occasionally still use. That was 50 years ago. I eventually settled into a career as a single family home designer, which I found to be not all that different from designing clothing, strange to say. As a woman in a heavily male-dominated world of architecture, my career has had it's ups and downs, and during the downturns I often fell back on my fiber arts skills, taking in sewing projects, teaching sewing classes, working in fabric stores.

The skills illustrated in this video are extremely impressive, and it takes a LOT to impress me when it comes to sewing/tailoring skills. Beautiful gown, great techniques. Well done, very well done!

This dress and the final shots of you in it are perfect. Whoever helped shoot you in the dress knows their stuff when it comes to catching fabric with film. You are also such a skilled tailor, I'm sure you could make ANYTHING you wanted.

I cringed at the thought of sewing that fabric. It’s so slippery, tricky to pin, and every wrinkle will show if you don’t have your tension right with regular sewing machines. The final result is stunning! I don’t know how you managed to get the hand-gathered skirt tacked down that way with the lack of give that it has. The stays are truly a work of art in themselves! I love seeing each and every project you create. 💖

those stays and the wrinkle-free bodice are both a work of art. I am speechless!

That dress is stunning. The way it flows and moves is mesmerizing. Made me think of Cinderella, not just because it's blue but those shots of you running in it made me think of Cinderella running away from the ball. This dress would look gorgeous in a scene like that. Or dancing. It shines when it's moving
