  My father, who joined the US Navy in 1943 at the age of 17 and served aboard the light cruiser USS Montpellier CL-57 and was in the thick of it all through the pacific, and was here at the battle of Leyte Gulf where they took a kamakazi to the stern doing minor damage, but killing several sailors two of which my dad's best friends. He told me there was no time to mourn the dead because there were more inbound kamikazes. My dad was part of a 40mm bofors gun crew on the starboard side and they shot down a Kamikazi at a range of about 3000yds, and they believed they hit the bomb, that was probably a thousand pounder, because the plane was just eviscerated, leaving nothing but smoke. My dad was a kid of the depression and joined the navy for three hots and a cot, and saw far more action than his young mind, body and spirit could process. Rest in peace, dad. You did your job and you did it well, and not a day goes by that your family doesn't love you and miss you terribly. 🇺🇲⚓️🗽🔥👍🙏💯💕

  MY DAD WAS ON THE USS BIRMINGHAM AND WAS ALMOST KILLED WHEN THE PRINCTON BLEW UP. HE GOT A GOLD STAR FOR A SECOND PURPLE HEART AT OKINAWA.

  The sinking of the hell ship Lisbon Maru by an American sub was not the only one. The Shinyo Maru with 800 American POW’s was sunk by the USS Paddle killing all but about 80. My great uncle Harry E Byrum Jr. was killed on the Shinyo. He was captured on Corregidor when it surrendered.
