I'm retired Army and graduated from the U.S. Army Interdiction rifle school in the early days of my life, later sniper school. In our day, the M-24 Remington 700 was the standard using the 7.62x51mm NATO. That round and the Army limited us to 750 meters. Later we went to the 300 Win mag that gave us the ability to go past 1000 meters, we really liked the round. The external ballistics you bring up is very true and it especially applies to a cartridge that loses its energy quickly and effected by external variables like the 7.62x51mm. I will have to say I am at awe of guys that complete in 1 mile competition and guys that compete in ultra-long range shooting, we couldn't think that far back then, but then we didn't have the equipment back then. LOL.

As a competitive shooter since I was 13 and later a military shooter, it's about time someone came up with an accurate analysis of sniping and long distance shooting... compared to the ridiculous film portrayal. Well done.

The Assasins by Richard Donner: Antonio Banderas waits for Stallone to exit a building. It takes time. Hours. At one moment he has to use a bottle. 😂

Q - What they did right in the opening scene of “Shooter”?

A - They make a range card.

Thanks for the great video :)

One more trope you might have adressed is the sniper taking his rifle and scope in parts out of a suitcase and assembeling it on scene. This one drives me crazy when they take perfect shots without re-zeroing the rifle first.

Interesting video. A few things the narrator didn't speak about. 1. At long range, the (spinning) bullet undergoes 'precession', meaning that it goes in an increasing spiral movement. The maths in computing a long shot can be hairy, but even hairier if you have to actually calculate the precession of the bullet. 2. Some snipers have taken to laying out wind guagaes at points along the track, so the differences in windage along the track can be taken into account. 3. Depending on your mission, you may have more than just one spotter with you. US snipers in Iraq sometimes had up to seven counter-snipers with them, to protect them from being sniped themselves. 4. In fact, the poor spotter not only spots the sniper's targets, as well as finding the range, calculating the windage and drop, and so forth, but also has a marksman-type rifle with him (or her) to counter-snipe, has to navigate the sniper to his (or her) firing position, communicate with homebase, squad leader, or whoever needs to be communicated with, and also makes the tea and tucks the sniper into bed at night. 5. Some ghillie suits have no fly or any aperture through which it is possible to piss. They can get a bit smelly over the period of a mission 🙂

I recall reading an item about a sniper who explained his (at the time) "longest kill", because a lot of the time, snipers don't talk about their work. He was using the .338 Lapua magnum and the targets were about 1,000yds beyond the 'effective' range of his rifle. It took him 9 or 10 shots before he was 'on' (apparently the machine gun crew were either deafened, or were more interested in the task at hand to realize they were being shot at), then he hit the gunner, feeder and machine gun they were using, disabling it, with his next 3 shots.

I think that the most realistic sniper scene was in the original Day of the Jackal, with Edward Fox.
He took the shot from within the security cordon, back inside the room, supported, made-to-measure custom rifle, and he zeroed the gun. Admittedly, he didn't zero the gun on the day, but he did zero it.
And he missed his one shot.

The insert of all those memes while the presenter talks in a most serious manner was entirely unexpected. I was enjoying the info dump, and then out of nowhere there's a laugh. Such a strange dynamic for the video, but I loved it.

I think the 80's version of snipers are the best: totally impossible but fun to watch!
And let's not forget the suppressors at 2 miles out and rifles disguised as toothbrushes!

In the Magnificent Seven, the Coburn character careful aim at a bandit galloping away on a horse with a huge lead. He shoots the rider off his horse. The guy next to Coburn said it was the great shot he had ever seen. Coburn screams in disgust, "The worst! I was aiming at the horse."
