Something interesting about the original Lovecraft story was how eerily similar the Color's effects were to radiation sickness: an indescribable "color" not on the normal visible spectrum of light slowly mutates and kills anything within its vicinity. And this was way before anyone really knew much of anything about how radiation worked or the effects it had on its surroundings.

In the original story the Color just made its way to the well, and then spread through the water table of the valley in the water. It infected everything that drank the water, and thereafter started siphoning away their life force. It affected and mutated the plants first, and then anything that ate the plants and drank the water in the valley. And then anything that ate THOSE. And everything it affected would become that horrible Color, and be twisted and altered in an unspecified subtle but horrifying way, and would eventually fade in color until it turned ashy and white and died, whereupon it'd crumble into dust as an empty husk. There was zero body fusing. There was no virus or bacteria, it was LITERALLY just a Color. It had a main mass in the Well but it was physically spread across all the things it was infecting all at once.

It spread to the farm family horrifically fast, since it entered the water table through their well to begin with. The last member of the farm family to die had refused to drink the water from the well, insisting on drinking from the rain barrel instead, until it ran out and he died of thirst, all the while trying to tend to and help the rest of his family.

But the worst part was that final night in the valley that would become later known as the Blasted Heath. The thing that happened the mere rumor of which ensured that lifeless valley would be abandoned forever. When a great mass of disembodied Color rose out of the Well, and flew up into the sky, draining everything it had inhabited up to that point to dust in minutes...

...and a second smaller mass of Color fell back into the Well because it wasn't strong enough to leave like its sibling. A Color is still in the Blasted Heath, in that forsaken well, but it is not strong enough to relocate itself, and can't passively spread beyond the water table of the valley, and the first attempt to depart the world fully exhausted all the energy it had access to in the Heath.

So good ending, it's trapped there forever, right?

Nope. What is driving the teller of the story is finding out that the county intends flood the valley known as the Blasted Heath to make a reservoir for nearby Arkham.

The same horror story is about to replay.... on a much more horrifically large scale.

Hey Roanoke! Fun fact, the reason magenta is the color associated with the entity is because magenta is an example of a color we can't properly perceive. It should be something closer tk green on the spectrum, but our brain can't technically see it and fills it in with a pinkish purplish color.

‘Melded together’ is a sci-fi horror trope that’s surprisingly common, and never fails to make me feel ill when I see/read it.

fun fact: If you listen carefully to the static that pops up in some of the scenes, you'll hear dialogue from later in the film. Its a nod to the fact that to the Color, time aint linear and as its influence grows time starts to become a little bit funky. Other elements of this: the characters becoming unaware of how much time has passed in various scenes, the day/night cycle being all over the place from scene to scene, the pink tornado scene shows multiple versions of characters performing different acts (this is alternate timeline versions of these characters being shown as the color's influence has expanded) etc... theres actually more examples that you can catch on repeat viewings.

Oh, its that lady that survived the Event Horizon rescue mission! Like one encounter with interdimentional evil from space wasn't enough for her....

At certain points in this movie you can tell the director just said "Go full Cage!”. This was such a perfect movie for The Cage.

I've heard a theory that Nic Cage's character is swapping between his father's consciousness and his own. Haven't seen this in a while, I think I'll get back into it. One of the most Nic Cage performances of all time.

I appreciate that the Color did do exactly what Lavinia asked. It did what it could to heal the wasting sickness of her mother by giving her a new body that could consume others to grow strong and it protected her, and presumably delivers her somewhere away from her family.

Got a lot of comments to make here, but I'd like to just say that Cage's "weird accent" is his impression of his dad that he did earlier in the movie. He's talking now like how he remembers his dad talking
