I only own about 25 "ancient" coins. I told my wife that some of them are probably fake. She asked why we would buy fake coins and I told her that they were most likely faked 2000 years ago.

In my humble opinion your channel is the best ancient coin channel on YouTube. Cheers from Queensland, Australia.

When I showed some Solidus to a relative, I got two questions. The first one was: “Is it a fake?” The second was: “Is it stolen?” 🙄

Was thinking about starting the hobby. But now I feel worse about it as it seems daunting. Thanks for the transparency.

The cracks in a coin can be very telling and it can at least indicate a legitimate strike from when the coin was made. Many fakes are cast and can't accurately replicate a crack.

It's always amazing to see a genuine ancient coin or object of thousands years old that is so well preserved that it looks brand new. A friend of mine collected acient Persian pottery, some pieces without any blemish, not even a scratch with marvellous colours. Some ancient coins hardly circulated before being buried in the ground (in jars). Desert sand in particular is a perfect conservator.

You hit the nail squarely on the head with this video, Leo. A well-balanced presentation!

Hi Leo, thanks for the quote, I enjoyed especially this video, and agree with every word! Super well researched (as usual)!

I have theories on understanding authenticity of coins (I’ve only been collecting for a year though) but this is it:
1 - I assume that if someone is going to fake a coin, they are less likely to do it with less valuable coins, as the effort required to forge them wouldn’t be worth the effort.
2 - lower value coins that are faked, would have to be mass produced, therefore surely other coins created from the same die would be seen in the market.
3 - surface flaws of pitting, understanding natural wear across raised surfaces and off struck coins I imagine will be some ‘small’ but important considerations.

Many people like perfect coins, but I personally like more interesting coins with real wear and damage, as they are less likely to be fakes and show character and history, and feel much realer to me.

I’m interested if my opinion is shared, if I’m wrong in anyway etc?
